Alar

Alar is an easy chair developed for the Oita Airport lounge in Japan. The lounge, designed by Japanese architect Takao Shiotsuka, features a striking plywood centrepiece in the skeletal form of a tree.
In a hypothetical exercise the lounge was to be upgraded to first class and required more suitable furniture. Alar draws inspiration from the form and materials of the centerpiece. It is comfortable for a wide range of body types and supports activities such as reading, watching TV, tablet browsing and conversing.
The frame of the chair is constructed from tube steel which was bent to shape in sections and welded together, the backrest and seat are constructed of plywood which has been vacuum formed and upholstered in a grey wool felt.
